 for Schools, Youth and Community Groups

In the workshops held on your premises I would:
- introduce the art of mosaic by displaying examples of my own mosaics, my portfolio of my own and past students’ work and books and brochures on the subject;
- demonstrate how to design and lay out a mosaic, the techniques of mosaic making with specific terminology, tile cutting and shaping through the correct use of tools, appropriate adhesive materials to use and grouting and polishing of the finished mosaic; and
- with students’ permission, digitally photograph their art work in progress and on completion, give a brief critique of their finished mosaic and suggest web sites, other sources of information and direction for further study of the art.

The length of time for a mosaic workshop would depend on the size of the project, whether it is using the “direct” or “indirect” method, and the number of participants i.e. a series of three or four 2-3 hour sessions to produce a small, individual piece of mosaic art (approximately 12” x 18”) for the students to take home, to several months’ work on a large exterior wall mural involving the whole group. Sessions can be tailored to suit the client. |

Learn how to construct a “ROMAN” mosaic slab using the “indirect” method: a traditional technique of initially laying the mosaic “upside down” onto paper within a wooden frame then backfilling with concrete. This method is suitable for outdoor garden mosaics.
I have found a productive group should be no more than eight to ten enthusiastic participants (young people in the age range from 10 to 18 years). Students need not necessarily be good at drawing as a piece of mosaic art can be accomplished by anyone with an interest in learning this ancient art form.
I charge an hourly rate which includes all
materials (bought-in mosaic tile such as vitreous glass
or smalti, specialist adhesives and/or grouts for some
projects are extra and these costs will be discussed
beforehand), plus travel expenses.
I provide all necessary safety and protective
equipment, mosaic making tools and learning resources
for the duration of the workshops.
Access to water and electricity is required on site. The work space will be left tidy and clean after the workshops. |
Grant assistance is sometimes available for some community art-based projects and I would be happy to source the relevant information and assist with form-filling and completion.
I am a self-employed mosaic artist and run my own business “CLASSICAL MOSAIC” selling my mosaic art through exhibitions, galleries and my web site. I am available for private and public mosaic commissions as well as facilitating mosaic workshops |
